Start with the thread
Thread designation is normally the first sizing reference because it determines the mating connection. Confirm the thread standard, diameter, pitch where relevant and engagement requirement. Do not assume that a visually similar bolt will match an existing threaded hole or component.
Measure overall geometry
Useful dimensions include shank length, thread length, eye outside diameter, eye inside diameter and shoulder diameter where applicable. A drawing is the clearest method. A marked photograph or sketch can also be useful when replacing an existing part.
Size is not a load rating
A larger thread does not automatically make a product suitable for every lifting situation. Material, manufacturing method, configuration, seating and loading direction all need consideration. Use documented product information and application-specific guidance before selecting a lifting component.
